Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati

The school's Audio/Video Production program has launched a new show "What's Up in the Valley," for each quarterly open house. This local community talk show features businesses and events specific to the Woodlawn and Evendale communities near Cincinnati. Anthony Amico, adjunct instructor, hosts the show which has featured the Director of Economic Development for the City of Evendale, the mayor of Woodlawn, and the Cincinnati Excite professional soccer team.

Students enrolled in Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati's Audio/Video Production (AVP) program helped a recent Iraq war veteran record a song — and received valuable learning experience which was shared with a national audience. In August 2006, Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati AVP instructor Jon Brennan recorded the song "A Traitor's Death" in the school's recording studio with Iraq war veteran Josh Hisle. In September, Josh performed the song with music legend and social activist Neil Young. Brennan extended this relationship with Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati AVP students. On November 7, 2006, Josh Hisle was interviewed for CNN's 360 with Anderson Cooper program.

Martha Schottelkotte, career services advisor, has been asked to serve as the president of the Woodlawn Chamber of Commerce. Her two year term begins in January 2007, marking a wonderful professional opportunity for Martha and a significant community presence for Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati.

Through the combined efforts of Academic Affairs and Career Services, Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati has begun a participation in Procter & Gamble's (P&G) SuccessWay Coop program. In competition with seven other area universities and colleges, Brown Mackie College — Cincinnati's accounting and business management students won six of 50 seats in a fall symposium at P&G. Five of these students went on to successfully interview for positions at P&G's corporate headquarters in Cincinnati. These are 40-week paid cooperatives that lead to full time employment with P&G, while maintaining the students' full time academic pursuits. Efforts are now being made to leverage similar opportunities with other major corporate entities in the area.

Brown Mackie College — Findlay

On October 13, 2006, Brown Mackie College — Findlay hosted a legal seminar for students that was at not cost to the students. The agenda featured area legal professionals speaking on the topics of juvenile probation, self-defense, bankruptcy and collection laws, and the drafting of a last will and testament. Students were also coached in the area of professional presentation. Another similar seminar is planned for the spring of 2007.

During the most recent evaluation for a new grant of accreditation, Brown Mackie College — Findlay received the maximum 8-year approval by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). ACICS has recognized Brown Mackie College — Findlay as an "Honor Roll Institution with Distinction."

Brown Mackie College — Fort Wayne

The school recently contracted with the Fort Wayne Urban League to offer classes at its location for the students whom they are providing educational funding, pending regulatory approval. The Urban League offers programs and resources for all levels of education, job placement and training, affordable housing and home buying, business development, after-school care, mentoring, healthcare counseling, and much more.

Brown Mackie College — Kansas City

The Department of Nursing at Brown Mackie College — Kansas City conducted its first nurse pinning ceremony on December 3, 2006. Seven candidates of graduation were honored in the pinning ceremony, with each student selecting a family member or friend to pin them, while interim nursing program director Sandy Sacry read statements from the graduate nurses about why they chose the person they did to place their pin. These graduates are the first practical nursing students to complete their programs at the Kansas City school.

On October 20, 2006 the school's Beta Kappa Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted 26 students into the international honor society. The inductees had to maintain at least a 3.5 CGPA and complete at least 24 quarter credit hours in their degree programs to be eligible.

Robert Morse, JD, chair of the Legal Studies department at Brown Mackie College — Kansas City, was named Instructor of the Year (Professional Studies) at the annual workshops and luncheon sponsored by the Kansas Association of Private Career Colleges and Schools. The annual event is co-sponsored by the Missouri Association of Private Colleges and Schools.

Brown Mackie College has recently added two new members to its Board of Trustees: Carol Brandert and Elsie Faciane. The Brown Mackie College Board of Trustees in Kansas serves as the governing body of both Brown Mackie College — Kansas City and Brown Mackie College — Salina.

Brown Mackie College — Louisville

Brown Mackie College — Louisville was presented the "Above and Beyond Award" on behalf of the Kentucky Joint Forces. One of only five employers in the entire state to receive this distinction, Brown Mackie College — Louisville received this award for outstanding service and continuing support to the National Defense. The school received this honor because it excelled in providing support to its employees who serve in the National Guard and Reserve Forces by practicing military leave policies that exceed those required by law.

Brown Mackie College — Michigan City

The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) granted the school's Medical Assisting Associate Degree Program the maximum allowable term of accreditation — 6 years. The ABHES is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an accreditor of institutions offering predominantly allied health education. Its recognition also includes specialized accreditation of medical assisting, medical laboratory technology, and surgical technology programs within public and private institutions.

Brown Mackie College — North Canton

On January 16, 2007, Brown Mackie College — North Canton held its groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its new school in Jackson Township, Canton. Over 60 guests from the local community, media, Brown Mackie College and EDMC joined staff and students from the school to celebrate and to break ground on the new 50,000 square foot building, set to open later this year. Guest speakers at the ceremony included Danny Finuf, BMC system president; Peter Perkowski, BMC—North Canton president; Max Lerner, executive director of the Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools; and Marva Jones, superintendent of the City of Canton Schools.

Brown Mackie College — Northern Kentucky

Nine criminal justice students from Brown Mackie College — Northern Kentucky and instructor Brandy Taylor competed in the American Criminal Justice Association (ACJA) regional competition on October 19th, held this year in Columbia, SC. The Brown Mackie College team garnered nine ribbons in competition, which included writing and speaking exams on a variety of criminal justice-related topics.

Students in the Brown Mackie College — Northern Kentucky chapter of the ACJA's Lambda Alpha Epsilon organization competed in areas of academics and physical skills, including exams in juvenile justice, corrections, criminal law, police administration, and knowledge in the ACJA's codes of ethics and history.

Debra Fey, RN, BSN, Practical Nursing program administrator at Brown Mackie College — Northern Kentucky, was quoted in the original feature story "The Nursing Shortage: How Today's Nursing Students Are Trained to Help Aging Population." This feature discusses the serious shortage of nurses in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, and how schools such as Brown Mackie College are preparing students to help fill this void. The feature story has appeared in numerous media outlets across the country, including The Star Ledger in Newark, NJ, and The Queens Tribune in New York.

Ilene McDonough, M.Ed., paralegal instructor at Brown Mackie College — Northern Kentucky, had the article "Total Emotional Intelligence: Inside & Out" published in the December 6, 2006 edition of the online Connections magazine on corrections.com. Corrections.com is designed as a comprehensive news site dealing with prison and parole issues, and serves as an online network for corrections and criminal justice professionals.

Brown Mackie College — Salina

Garnett Zamboni, director of career services at Brown Mackie College — Salina, was quoted in the Salina Journal in the story "Hottest Jobs: Medical Field Offers Security, Good Pay." The article examined the possibilities for those wishing to enter the medical and health services fields. Said Zamboni in the story: "Just about every area of medical is growing. The demand is growing stronger in rural, non-metropolitan areas. I think people are going to have to get ready to relocate, or at least drive more than a half an hour."

On December 2, 2006, the Salina Journal reported on the school's move and expansion of office space and classrooms, due to an increase in enrollment. The school will have new office space at the Fountain Plaza center, including student financial services, career services, student records and the athletic department.

Brown Mackie College — South Bend

The school was honored by The Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County at the annual Salute to Business celebration luncheon held on Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at the Century Center. The college was recognized with highest honors for its business success, growth, and positive contribution to the community. The program honored businesses in the community along with a keynote address by Wally Adamchik, author, entrepreneur and Marine pilot instructor at 9G Enterprises, Inc. The college was represented at the luncheon by Connie Adelman, Campus President; Sheryl Decker; Director of Career Services; and Bill Hansen, Dean of Academic Affairs.
