Widely known through the coaching circles, Francis Flax is no stranger to Junior College Basketball. Beginning his 26th year as a Junior College coach, Flax is the only men’s basketball coach Brown Mackie College has ever known. The dean of JC coaches in Kansas, this season will be the 17th such season at the Salina, Kansas based school, a school that has only had an intercollegiate program for 17 years. Prior to Brown Mackie, Flax coached at Highland Community College in Highland, Kansas. He also spent 9 seasons at 2 Kansas High Schools, Spearville and Ellinwood. Entering the 2008-09 season, Flax has amassed 605 career wins, with 315 coming while coaching at Brown Mackie.
Since joining the ranks of NJCAA Division II in the 1996-97 season, the Lions have won 261 games and have lost 140. This includes 4 trips to the NJCAA National Tournament, claiming two 4th place finishes and 2 National Championships. Two of his former players signed NBA contracts, but more importantly, 83 former players of Brown Mackie have furthered their careers at 4-year schools.
In addition to his High School and Junior College experience, Flax served as the Head Coach of the Kansas Cagerz, a professional team in the United States Basketball League (USBL) from 2000 through 2007. At the end of the 2007 season, Flax had won more games than any other active USBL coach. His coaching competition included former NBA stars Kareem Abdul Jabaar, Darryl Dawkins, Rick Berry, Rex Morgan, Lionel Hollins, Robert Parish, Roy Rogers, Cliff Levingston, John Starks, and others. Five former Cagerz coached by Flax either are or have played in the NBA, while countless others are playing overseas.
Flax and his wife Carmen reside in Salina. He is the father of 4 children, Renee, Lynell, Rachael, and Bryson.

Jason Homer
Assistant Coach
Jason Homer returns to the sidelines in 2008-09 for his 4th stint as an Assistant Coach to his former Junior College Coach, Francis Flax. Homer is a 1995 graduate of Field Kindley High School in his hometown of Coffeyville, Kansas. He was a member of the Coffeyville Red Raven basketball team during the 1995-96 season. After being away from college for a short time, he enrolled at Brown Mackie College in the fall of 1998. He was a key memberof the 1998-99 Brown Mackie squad that captured the NJCAA National Championship in Danville, Illinois. In 1999-2000, he was a 2-sport athlete at Fairmont State University in West Virginia. Jason is single and resides in Salina.
Bruce Lacy
Assistant Coach
Bruce Lacy enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Brown Mackie Basketball program. The Brooklyn, New York native has been involved as a Youth Counselor and Basketball Coach in both New York and California. While serving in the United States Air Force, Coach Lacy played on the Base Basketball teams both at Travis Air Force and at Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Bruce and his wife Ethel reside in Salina.
